Diagnostics and In-House Laboratory

Fast, accurate answers when your pet needs them. Our in-house laboratory delivers results within the same appointment.

OC Pets Diagnostics and In-House Laboratory in Dubai

When a pet is unwell, the wait for results is one of the hardest parts. At OC Pets, we invested in full in-house diagnostic capability specifically to cut that wait. Our IDEXX Catalyst and ProCyte analysers process comprehensive blood chemistry, complete blood counts and electrolyte panels in under 20 minutes. For most urgent cases, we have the information we need before the appointment ends, which means treatment starts the same day.

Complete Blood Count and Blood Chemistry

The complete blood count (CBC) measures red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, revealing anaemia, infection, immune responses and clotting capacity. The biochemistry panel assesses kidney and liver function, blood glucose, proteins and electrolytes.

Together, these two panels give a comprehensive picture of organ health and systemic disease. We run them routinely before anaesthesia, as part of wellness screening in senior pets and whenever a clinical finding suggests internal disease.

SDMA and Early Kidney Disease Detection

SDMA (symmetric dimethylarginine) is a biomarker that detects chronic kidney disease significantly earlier than traditional creatinine-based tests. In some patients, SDMA rises before 75 percent of kidney function is lost, whereas creatinine only becomes abnormal after that threshold.

Earlier detection means earlier dietary and medical intervention, which substantially extends good-quality life in affected pets. We include SDMA in senior screening panels and in any patient with known kidney risk factors.

Urinalysis

Urine analysis provides information that blood tests alone cannot, particularly for assessing kidney concentrating ability, detecting bladder infections, identifying glucose spills in diabetic patients and spotting urinary crystals before they form stones.

We perform in-house urinalysis with microscopy on fresh samples. For cultures (to identify the specific bacteria causing a urinary infection and the antibiotics it responds to), samples are sent to an external laboratory with results typically within two to three days.

Cytology and Microscopy

In-house cytology allows us to evaluate skin scrapes, ear swabs, fine needle aspirates of lumps and fluid samples under the microscope within minutes. This often provides a rapid preliminary diagnosis and guides immediate treatment decisions.

For many common conditions such as bacterial or yeast ear infections, mite infestations and skin infections, cytology provides all the information needed to begin targeted treatment the same day rather than treating empirically and hoping.

Wood's Lamp UV Screening

The Wood's Lamp emits UV light that causes certain ringworm fungi to fluoresce green. This is used as a rapid preliminary screening tool for skin infections caused by dermatophytes. Not all species fluoresce, so a negative result does not fully rule out ringworm, but a positive finding is strongly suggestive and prompts fungal culture for confirmation.

Wood's Lamp examination takes under a minute and can be done as part of any skin consultation. It is particularly useful in households where multiple animals or children may have been exposed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly do blood test results come back?

In-house blood tests (CBC and biochemistry) are typically ready within 15 to 20 minutes. We discuss results with you before you leave. Cultures, histopathology and specialist panels sent to an external laboratory take 2 to 5 working days.

Does my pet need to fast before a blood test?

For some panels, particularly lipid and glucose assessment, a 4 to 6 hour fast produces more reliable results. We advise you when booking whether fasting is recommended. For emergency diagnostics, tests are run immediately regardless of fasting status.

What does a blood test show?

A comprehensive blood panel assesses red and white blood cell populations, kidney function, liver function, blood glucose, protein levels, electrolytes and inflammatory markers. Together they tell us whether major organs are functioning normally and whether there is evidence of infection, anaemia, metabolic disease or hormonal abnormality.

Is sedation needed for blood collection?

The vast majority of blood samples are collected without sedation. Most dogs and cats tolerate a brief blood draw very well with calm, confident handling. For fractious animals or those in significant pain, mild sedation may be used to reduce stress.

Can I request specific tests?

Yes. While we recommend panels based on clinical signs and history, you can request specific additions. We will advise whether additional tests are clinically warranted based on the presentation.
