Most people bring their pet in when something seems off, not knowing exactly what they are worried about. That is normal, and it is exactly what a consultation is for. At OC Pets, every general visit starts with your concerns and ends with a clear picture of where your pet's health stands and what, if anything, needs to happen next. There are no rushed appointments here.
What We Assess in Every Consultation
The physical examination covers every system: eyes, ears, oral cavity, lymph nodes, heart and lungs, abdomen, skin and coat, musculoskeletal alignment and neurological responses. We correlate what we find with your pet's history, breed predispositions and lifestyle to build context around any abnormality.
Many conditions present with subtle early signs that are only detectable during a hands-on examination. Heart murmurs, early dental disease, subtle weight changes, early kidney disease and beginning stages of joint stiffness are all things a thorough examination picks up before your pet shows obvious discomfort. Annual check-ups remain important even when pets appear completely healthy.

Preventive Care Planning
Preventing disease costs far less than treating it, and most serious conditions in pets are preventable or significantly reducible with the right routine care. We review your pet's vaccination status, parasite prevention, dental health and nutrition at every visit.
Rather than applying a generic protocol, we build plans around your specific pet. A Labrador spending time outdoors in Business Bay has different risk exposures than an indoor cat that never leaves a flat. We account for lifestyle, breed, age and the UAE environment when making recommendations.
Wood's Lamp UV Screening
For pets with skin or coat concerns, we include a Wood's Lamp examination as part of the standard consultation. UV light can reveal dermatophyte (ringworm) infections and certain bacterial patterns that are invisible under normal lighting. The examination takes seconds and is done whenever skin or coat findings prompt it.
A positive result guides us to culture and confirmation; a negative result helps rule out one of the most common skin infection causes quickly. This saves owners an anxious wait and allows targeted treatment to begin sooner.

Puppy and Kitten First Visits
The first consultation for a new puppy or kitten sets the foundation for their lifetime of care. We perform a full physical examination, review vaccination history from the breeder or rescue, create a vaccination and deworming schedule, advise on nutrition, socialisation and environment, and address every question new owners typically have.
Many owners arrive with pages of questions. We encourage it. Understanding what normal looks like for your specific pet, how their first year of health milestones should unfold, and what to watch for at home makes you a more confident owner and your pet a healthier patient.
Senior Pet Consultations
Pets age faster than we do, and health can change quickly in the senior years. From age seven onwards, and earlier for large breeds, we recommend twice-yearly visits. The senior examination includes everything in a standard consultation, with added attention to joint mobility, organ health indicators, dental disease progression, cognitive changes and body condition.
Catching chronic kidney disease, heart disease or early arthritis before they cause visible symptoms makes a significant difference in outcomes and quality of life. Senior screening is not about finding bad news; it is about staying ahead of it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a consultation take?
Most general consultations run 20 to 30 minutes. If your pet needs additional diagnostics, follow-up discussion or has a complex history, the appointment may run longer. We do not rush.
Do I need to book in advance?
We recommend booking ahead to ensure your preferred time, but same-day appointments are often available. Call 044 366 388 or message us on WhatsApp to check current availability.
What should I bring to the first visit?
Bring any existing vaccination records, health certificates, deworming history and any medications your pet is currently taking. Previous blood test results or reports from another clinic help us understand your pet's baseline.
How often should I bring my pet for a check-up?
Puppies and kittens need frequent visits during their first year for vaccines and deworming. Adult pets benefit from an annual wellness visit even when healthy. Senior pets (7 years and above, or 5 and above for large dog breeds) should come in every six months.
My pet seems fine. Is there still a reason to come in?
Yes. Many conditions including early kidney disease, heart murmurs, dental disease and tumours produce no visible symptoms until they are well advanced. Annual check-ups allow us to detect these early, when treatment is most effective.
